How do I apply?

You can apply on line via our website during the relevant recruitment period.

Must I have studied law?

No, not necessarily, we accept degrees from all disciplines.

Do you have any preference as to where I attained my degree?

No.  Once you have completed or are currently in your penultimate or final year of an undergraduate degree, you are eligible to apply for our SIP and Trainee Programmes.

Do you have a preference as to which modules I studied during my law degree?

No.  However, a focus on commercial modules is an advantage.

How do I differentiate myself on my application form?

Students often ask how they differentiate themselves on their application form.  Most application forms have a limit on the amount of information you can put in each section.  Therefore it's important to choose your words carefully and to be clear and concise.  It is also very important to think about exactly what you are putting on your application and what a corporate law firm might look for/expect in a candidate.  Ask yourself the following questions and how you might demonstrate your knowledge and skills in these areas on your form:

• Do I read business pages in newspapers, online?

• Do I know what's happening in the markets and on the global political stage?

• Do I know what legal developments are currently taking place in Ireland / abroad?

• What are the biggest challenges currently facing law firms?

• Do I have varied interests?

• What do I know about A&L Goodbody and how are my skills are suitable for the work we do?

• How have I challenged myself in my life to date?  Am I resilient?  How do I demonstrate this?

• Am I a good communicator?  How can I demonstrate this on my form?

• What are my achievements to date which show that I am a suitable candidate for corporate law?

How is the Firm structured?

A&L Goodbody is a partnership. The Firm has over 86 Partners and is managed by a Management Committee which is made up of the Managing Partner and the Heads of our main Departments.

Trainee Programme - ROI

What is a milkround?

The "Milkround" recruitment period is the term given to the period when organisations seek to recruit for their graduate programmes.  It generally takes place from September – November each year.  Organisations will make presentations and hold skills sessions on-campus and in-house, and interviews are also held on or off campus.

Is there someone I can discuss opportunities with before I accept a Traineeship?

You can discuss the prospect of a Traineeship with Berni Hosty, Partner with responsibility for our Trainee Solicitor & Summer Intern Programmes and Clodagh Collier, Trainee & Intern Programme Manager.  We are also happy to organise a chat over coffee or lunch with your interviewers, a current Trainee or another one of the firm's Partners or lawyers.

When do I apply for traineeship?

Our annual milkround recruitment process opens at the beginning of September of each year and closes mid. October.  Additionally, many of our Trainee Solicitors are recruited through our Summer Intern Programme, as all of our summer interns are guaranteed a trainee interview. 

Who can apply for the Trainee Programme?

All final year students, post graduates and those who have successfully obtained a third level degree qualification.

Is there more than one interview?

No, you will required to attend just one interview.

How many people will I be interviewed by?

Each interviewee will be interviewed by 2 person panel.

How many Trainee Solicitors do you recruit annually?

The number varies from year to year, but normally we recruit between 25 – 30 Trainee Solicitors per annum. It is important for us to support the Firm’s resource strategy by taking in top calibre Trainee Solicitors who we hope will stay with the Firm in the long term. We are focused on ensuring all Trainee Solicitors have a positive experience with A&L Goodbody whereby each Trainee Solicitor has all the support and training they need during their Traineeship. Therefore, we monitor our intake numbers to ensure we can deliver a quality Traineeship to those who have been offered a position with the Firm.

What intake dates are you recruiting for this year?

This year, we will be recruiting for Trainees to join or 2019 and 2020 Trainee Programmes.

Do Trainee Solicitors get a choice of rotations / seats?

Yes, we do try to accommodate any preferences Trainees may have and in most cases we can accommodate Trainee interests.

Which practice areas do Trainee Solicitors work in?

Trainee Solicitors will work in some of our main departments, namely: Corporate, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Banking & Financial Services and Commercial Property, Corporate Taxation and Pensions.

What is your retention rate for keeping Trainee Solicitors on after qualification?

We have an excellent retention rate, it is circa 95-100%.

Once I’ve accepted an offer when do I start my Traineeship?

Our official start date is in April of each year but at the firm’s discretion we can accommodate a start date in May for students who are awaiting the results of their FE1 exams.

I want to travel for a year before I start my Traineeship to get some more “life experience”, can I do this?

Where possible we are very happy to accommodate requests to defer commencement of traineeship if you would like to travel or pursue further studies before commencing your traineeship.

Do I need to have “Life Experience” to get a traineeship?

Challenging yourself outside of your comfort zone means that you can bring something more to the table as a Trainee. Your life experience will help you adjust to the challenges that traineeship brings and often helps you cope when in pressurised situations, so yes, we encourage future Trainee Solicitors to go out and sample some of what life has to offer before beginning traineeship, but it’s not a pre-requisite and is very much a personal decision.

Should I do a Masters?

Our position is that it's very much something for you to decide upon.  We provide full training for all Trainee Solicitors.  In conjunction with the Professional Practice courses run by the Law Society of Ireland, you will be fully prepared for life as a corporate lawyer when you qualify.  Therefore, having a Masters degree is not a pre-requisite to getting an offer from A&LG.  Doing a Masters is an expensive undertaking and whilst there is certainly no negative impact in doing a Masters (our view is that all knowledge is helpful), applicants should not feel that they “need” to have a Masters to get into A&L Goodbody. It is very much a personal decision.

Will my Law Society fees be paid?

Yes, once you commence your Traineeship, all Law Society fees will be paid in full.

Will the fees for my FE1 exams be paid?

No, the firm does not currently pay for FE1s.

How is the Training Contract structured?

All trainees complete 4 "rotations" or "seats", spending approximately 6 months in 4 different practice areas.  The training contract is roughly broken downs as follows:

What does my Traineeship involve?

As a Trainee Solicitor you will have the opportunity to work in and experience a range of practice areas as you progress through your training contract. The breadth of practice areas makes A&L Goodbody a stimulating and challenging place to work.

What kind of ‘on the job’ training will I receive?

Our commitment to training and development helps us to both attract and retain the brightest people. Working as a Trainee Solicitor your professional development here at A&L Goodbody is a priority.

Do you offer training apart from "on the job" training?

Yes, the Firm has an award winning Learning and Development department and Knowledge Management Centre. Please see our Legal Education and Learning section in our Overview of the Programme page on our website for further information.

Will I have the opportunity to do further training if I wish to?

Yes, to enhance and support our Legal Education and Learning programme, you are encouraged to participate in further training or learning, based on your specific interests. Financially, a professional development bursary is available to all Trainee Solicitors to facilitate this.  Trainees will receive further support in the form of study leave and professional guidance if required.

 

Summer Intern Programme - ROI

Who can apply?

Applicants must have commenced the penultimate or final year of their degree in the September preceding their application; be post graduates; or have successfully obtained a third level degree qualification.

How long is the internship?

All of our legal internships are 4 weeks in duration.

When will I do my internship?

We run three programmes each summer, one in June, July and August/September

Can I choose which programme I participate in?

Yes, we do our very best to accommodate your preferred programme dates.

I am in the second year of a 3 year degree - can I apply for an internship?

Yes, as you are in your penultimate year of your degree.

I am in the second year of a 4 year degree - can I apply for an internship?

No, you must at least be in the penultimate year of your degree.  Why?  As second year students still have 2 years of their degree to complete, we find that if students are offered a traineeship at the end of the summer internship programme, it can be difficult to make a decision at that stage, as in order to complete FE1s, there is often a 2-4 year gap between our offer and the start your training contract.  It can be hard to make a decision now on where you will be in 4 or 5 years' time as you are in your penultimate year of your degree.

How many Summer Interns do you recruit annually?

The number varies from year to year, but normally we recruit between 15-20 Summer Interns for each of June, July and September. It is important for us to support the Firm’s resource strategy by recruiting top calibre Summer Interns who we hope will eventually become part of our Trainee Solicitor Programme. We are focused on ensuring all Summer Interns have a positive experience with A&L Goodbody whereby each Intern has all the support and exposure to life as a Trainee Solicitor they need during their internship. Therefore, we monitor our intake numbers to ensure we can deliver a quality internship to those who have been offered a placement with the Firm.

Is there more than one interview?

No, you will required to attend just one interview.

How many people will I be interviewed by?

Each interviewee will be interviewed by 2 person panel.

What kind of work will I be doing as a summer intern?

As a summer intern you can expect to experience the work of a Trainee Solicitor.  You will work with a legal team of Partners, Associates and Trainee Solicitors. You will be given the opportunity to become fully involved in the work of the team, learning how our business works and how to interact with clients.

Will I be interviewed for traineeship when my internship finishes?

Yes, you get an automatic interview for traineeship once you have completed your internship.  Summer Interns are interviewed for traineeship directly after they finish their internship.

LawStart - ROI

Who can apply?

First and second year undergraduates are eligible to apply.

When will I do my LawStart day?

We host 4 LawStart days each year.  2 in January and 2 in May. 

Can I choose which LawStart day participate in?

Yes, you can apply for your preferred LawStart day.  We do our very best to accommodate your preferred dates.

I am a third year undergraduate student, can I apply for a LawStart day?

No, you are not eligible to apply for the LawStart Programme.  However, you can apply for our Summer Intern Programme.

How many LawStart students do you recruit annually?

We have approximately 15-20 students on each of our LawStart days.

What will I be doing for the day?

You can expect to meet with our Trainee Partner, the Graduate team, work shadow a Trainee and get some application advice and tips for our Trainee Programme.  At the end of the day you should have a better understanding of how LawFirms work and what the role of the Trainee Solicitor involves.

Is there an interview?

No, there is no interview for the LawStart programme.  You just submit your application form online.  All application forms are reviewed by Associates in the firm and then we let you know whether or not your application is successful.

Should I do a Masters?

Will I be entitled to study leave?

Yes. Study leave is provided to employees who have completed one year of service with the Firm and are undertaking a course of study which has been approved by that employee’s Partner/Manager as being appropriate and relevant to their job. 

How is the Firm structured?
