Michael Barr is a Partner in the Corporate Department and focuses on various aspects of mutual funds law and regulation and on the establishment, authorisation and listing of funds in Ireland.
He advises on the setting-up of various types of UCITS and non-UCITS Irish regulated funds. Michael has also set up various unregulated structures. He also works with fund service providers in connection with custody, administration, prime brokerage and other service agreements. Michael has significant experience in general corporate law which is of much benefit to our funds industry clients.
He has advised: on the set-up of Strategic Active Trading Funds plc, a multi-manager UCITS III fund offering exposure to a variety of hedge fund managers in a UCITS III environment; Prudential M&G in respect of their loan fund platforms; Majedie Asset Management in the conversion of their professional investor fund into a UCITS III fund; Deutsche Bank in respect of their UCITS III platform; BTG Pactual on the set up of a Qualifying Investor Fund targeting Brazilian investments; the Carlyle Group in setting up a Qualifying Investor Fund focusing on debt assets; Key Capital regarding their CLO equity funds; as well as AEGON, Smith & Williamson and Perennial Investment Partners in respect of their UCITS III platforms. Michael has also advised on the establishment of Irish regulated funds investing in life settlements.
Michael is recommended in IFLR1000 2011 and 2012, PLC Which Lawyer 2010 and 2011, Chambers Europe 2009, 2010 and 2011 where he is described as "a key member of the investment funds group", and The Legal 500 2010 and 2011 in the area of investment funds.
He is a member of the Alternative Investment Committee of the Irish Funds Industry Association. He has been published on a number of legal topics and has tutored in the Law Society of Ireland.
