Brian Butler is Head of VAT at A&L Goodbody advising on all areas of VAT with particular emphasis on property transactions and financial services.
Brian has over twenty five years experience in VAT including working in Revenue, Big 4 practice and in industry. Immediately prior to joining A&L Goodbody, Brian was European VAT Manager in GE.
Brian is a former council member of the Irish Taxation Institute and is a current member (former chairman) of the Indirect Tax Committee of the Irish Taxation Institute. He is also a current member (former chairman) of the TALC Indirect Tax Committee and a member of the Irish Funds Association Tax Committee.
Brian is editor of Tottel VAT Acts since 1999 and the current editor of the Irish Taxation Institute's publication "Value-Added Tax". He has also contributed articles to numerous tax publications including Irish Tax Review, International Tax Journal and Tax Planning International.
Recent experience includes using EU infringement procedures resulting in changes to Irish VAT legislation favorable to industry and acting as advisor in the first VAT case to be admitted to the Commercial Court and achieving a successful outcome.
