Peter Maher

Peter Maher is a Partner with A&L Goodbody's Tax Department, a team, described by The Legal 500, as having an “embarrassment of riches”. He was previously Head of the Firm's Tax Department for nearly 20 years.


He represents clients in every aspect of tax work, with particular emphasis on inbound investment, cross border financings and structuring, capital market transactions, fund formations and US multinational tax planning and business restructurings.

Experience includes advising:

  • Global Indemnity on its re-domestication of the Global Indemnity group from an entity incorporated in Ireland to an entity incorporated in the Cayman Islands.
  • Pfizer on its proposed $160bn merger with Allergan.
  • Medtronic on its $49bn acquisition of Covidien.
  • Towers Watson on its merger with Willis Group.
  • XL Group on its $4.2 billion acquisition of Catlin Group.
  • Endo Health Solutions on its $1.6bn acquisition of Paladin Labs and related corporate inversion into Ireland.
  • AIG on its proposed sale of ILFC to AerCap.
  • The Senior Lenders to eircom in relation to its €4bn examinership and financial restructuring.
  • Apollo Global Management on various Irish acquisitions including MBNA's credit card business and debt portfolios from Bank of Scotland Ireland.
  • The joint lead managers on the market placement of the State's €1bn contingent capital notes issued by Bank of Ireland.

Professional activities

He is a former Co-chair of the Taxes Committee of the International Bar Association and of the Irish Chapter of the International Fiscal Association. Peter lectures regularly including at various IBA, IFA and ABA tax conferences and has written extensively including contributing chapters for The Inward Investment and International Taxation Review by Law Business Research, The International Comparative Legal Guide to Corporate Tax by Global Legal Group, International Tax Law (Winning Legal Strategies) by Aspatore Books, Tax Treatment of Islamic Finance Products, a Comparative Survey by IBFD, writing articles for Tax Management Financial Products Report, World Securities Law Report and Finance, and Treasury Weekly Report.  He is also one of the contributing editors of Tax on Inbound Investment (Getting the Deal Through) by Law Business Research and one of the two Irish contributors to Tax Management International Forum.
