Regulatory change in practice: mastering change and mitigating risk

Hear about the lifecycle of regulatory change through the point of view of the first line business lead, second lines of defence, the external advisors and the regulators.

In an era of regulatory change and expansion, compliance is a real challenge for those in financial services. With the development of ‘principles based’ regulation, the challenges for firms in ensuring comprehensive and robust implementation and embedding have evolved. Businesses are required to ‘extrapolate’ regulatory guidance and assess how to best act in any particular situation without the support of detailed ‘rulebooks’.

We will bring our audience through some key milestones, from horizon scanning to embedding the operational, legal and governance steps to effectively implement regulatory change and mitigate risk.

Fraud vs friction: balancing the compliance burden with good business

All businesses alike face the competing challenges of increased operational threats from fraud (resulting in potential losses to the business) and increased regulatory obligations to prevent fraud or legal exposure where frauds occur (increasing costs to the business).

Most businesses can take a ‘risk-based approach’ to managing fraud and money laundering risk. Where is the line between ensuring compliance and remaining competitive and able to transact in today’s evolving and global markets?

This session will cover:

• What are the key fraud risks facing regulated and non-regulated businesses today?

•  What do new regulatory frameworks require front line, compliance and governance steps to do to monitor and prevent fraud risk?

•  How should regulated and unregulated businesses balance the cost of compliance with the ease of doing business: is this a choice, a risk, or a non-negotiable?

Regulator and DEI: measuring accountability, encouraging change or shifting course entirely

As regulatory and policy developments signal a potential retreat from DEI, the session will explore the current DEI regulatory landscape, the challenges regulators face in promoting DEI standards, and the broader implications of regulatory shifts for businesses. The discussion will focus on how regulators drive accountability—whether through guidance, thematic reviews or enforcement—and how these approaches influence corporate culture and inclusion efforts. The session will bring insights from domestic and international experiences and focus on how businesses can navigate regulatory expectations while fostering meaningful DEI progress.
