A&L Goodbody officially opens landmark headquarters in Dublin
A&L Goodbody LLP (ALG) has officially opened its newly redeveloped headquarters at 25 North Wall Quay, Dublin 1. The opening was attended by Taoiseach Micheál Martin who addressed nearly 600 from ALG’s Dublin office to celebrate the next chapter for the firm.
Spanning 155,000 sq. ft., the building was redeveloped in partnership with property owner IPUT Real Estate. It is a smart, technology enabled building, developed using best in class building techniques, with an emphasis on renewable energy and low carbon materials. This building sets the standard as it paves the way to net carbon zero offices.
The building has retained the majority (75%) of its original structure, resulting in substantial savings (56%) in carbon footprint and waste and reducing the embodied carbon intensity of the building which is a major issue affecting real estate globally.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin commented: “The opening of A&L Goodbody’s new office headquarters is a really exciting development - exciting for ALG, for Dublin’s business district and the wider Irish economy."
“As a leading Irish law firm, ALG has made a significant contribution to supporting growth in our economy and international investment. This landmark building provides a best-in-class sustainable HQ for a new era.”
David Widger, Managing Partner at ALG explained that, “This new headquarters reflects our confidence in, and ambition for, our business and for our clients. It is our building for the future, while staying rooted in the place we called home for over two decades. Since first moving to North Wall Quay in 1999, our firm has expanded significantly. The new building supports a state of the art, modern, working environment for those who work at ALG and the clients we support.”
“Working with IPUT, we've created a building that meets the highest standards and reflects the values of our clients and our business — forward-looking, responsible and globally connected.”
The office redevelopment project which began in 2022 includes two additional floors, landscaped terraces, a new atrium and a purpose-built client suite, designed to enhance the client experience and foster deeper collaboration. Whilst the office building has grown significantly in size, it is expected to use 67% less energy than it did before. This is due to low-carbon building operations, with an all-electric heat pump strategy, high-performance façade and smart technology in place to help the new headquarters operate as efficiently as possible.
ALG currently employs more than 1,000 people across its offices, including 346 lawyers and 120 partners. With a significant proportion of its clients coming from international businesses, ALG plays a role in supporting inward investment and economic development in Ireland. The firm advises across the island of Ireland through its offices in Dublin and Belfast, and overseas through its offices in London, New York, and San Francisco.
Niall Gaffney, CEO, IPUT Real Estate, said, “25 North Wall Quay is one of Ireland’s most sustainable buildings. We shared a vision with our long-term partner, A&L Goodbody: to create a net zero carbon office building that would offer their team, clients, and wider stakeholders an unmatched workplace. We are truly proud of the outcome, which sets a new benchmark in the Irish market and sits alongside the best workplaces globally."
