A&L Goodbody launches first Responsible Business report
A&L Goodbody (ALG) is proud to announce the launch of its first Responsible Business report, highlighting the firm’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, social impact and responsible business practices.
For over a decade, ALG has led the legal industry in Ireland in advancing responsible business. Key milestones include being the first Irish law firm to appoint a Corporate Responsibility Manager (2012), the first to achieve the Business Working Responsibly Mark (2016, reaccredited in 2019 and 2022), and the first to appoint a dedicated Pro Bono Associate (2018).
The report titled ‘Our future with purpose’, looks back at ALG’s 2022–2024 Responsible Business strategy and showcases the firm’s performance during that period across key areas including; environmental sustainability, community engagement, ESG advisory for clients, support for ALG’s people and pro bono work. It also celebrates the collective efforts of ALG colleagues who have helped shape and drive this sustainability journey.
Key highlights from the report include:
- People: strong engagement from colleagues with 80% of ALG lawyers participating in pro bono work; improving gender diversity at senior levels with half of promoted partners over the past five years being women.
- Social Impact: between 2022-2024 €540,000 made in firm donations to community partners; and €158,000 raised by over 650 colleagues engaged in fundraising and volunteering.
- Environment: new Dublin HQ powered by 100% renewable energy, supporting the firm’s science-based targets to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030.
- Pro Bono work: over 41,100 pro bono hours delivered in the past three years. In 2024 alone, ALG undertook more than 325 pro bono matters, with 375 legal professionals contributing over 14,000 hours of free legal advice.
David Widger, Managing Partner at A&L Goodbody, commented: “We’ve been at the forefront of being a responsible business for well over a decade. By being the first to introduce dedicated Responsible Business and Pro Bono teams, and growing them over the years, we’ve created programmes that deliver real impact in our society and the environment. We can look back with immense pride on everything we’ve done so far.”
“While we recognise there’s more we can achieve, and challenges lie ahead as the ESG landscape continues to evolve, we remain firmly committed to our responsibilities – to our people, our clients, our communities and the environment. This commitment is not just about doing the right thing, it’s central to how we operate and grow as a firm.”
