Mairead O’Brien is a partner in A&L Goodbody’s Disputes & Investigations Group.

Mairead’s practice focuses on advising corporate clients on contentious regulatory issues and white-collar crime matters. Mairead regularly supports clients in sensitive, fast-moving engagements with regulatory and law enforcement agencies, from initial incident response through to remediation and the defence of enforcement actions. Her experience includes advising on dawn raids, requests for information, evidence collection and disclosure, internal investigations, and self-reporting issues. She has particular expertise in consumer protection law issues and advising clients in the technology, consumer products and services, automotive, construction, financial services, and pharmaceutical sectors.

Mairéad has also completed a secondment as Legal Counsel with one of the world’s largest multinational technology companies.

  • Volkswagen on all aspects of the diesel emissions, including related litigation and regulatory enquiries.
  • Leading Irish construction company on an investigation involving the Irish tax authorities, Corporate Enforcement Authority and An Garda Síochána in relation to irregular transactions facilitated by employees and suppliers.
  • Leading US pharmaceutical company and charitable foundation on an internal investigation into suspected fraudulent applications for financial assistance culminating in a complaint to An Garda Síochána and criminal prosecution by the Director of Public Prosecution.
  • Leading multinational technology company in relation to a cross-border tax investigation involving Italian, Irish and US law issues.
  • Leading Irish-regulated firm in connection with a Garda National Economic Crime Bureau investigation into suspected market abuse and insider dealing, including support during the execution of search warrants at multiple locations, responses to production orders, and the provision of witness statements.
  • Large multinational technology company in relation to ongoing engagements with Irish and EU law enforcement and regulatory agencies regarding mutual legal assistance, domestic law enforcement requests, and regulatory information requests.
  • Various clients in the consumer and technology sector in District Court prosecutions brought by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commissioner and the Data Protection Commissioner.
  • Leading social media platform on consumer, advertising, and product regulation compliance requirements for a large-scale product launch.
  • Leading supermarket retailer on contentious comparative advertising matters arising from promotional campaigns, including proceedings before the courts and complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland.
  • Various clients in Consumer Protection Cooperation Network dialogues co led by the Irish Competition and Consumer Protection Commissioner and other European consumer protection authorities as well as responses to mutual assistance requests from those authorities.
