John Whelan


John Whelan is a Partner and leads the International Technology Practice at A&L Goodbody.

Experience

John advises clients in both the private and public sectors on commercial, regulatory and contentious matters with a particular focus on commercial, technology, data, contract and IP matters. John advises tech and pharma companies establishing operations in Ireland. Before returning to A&L Goodbody as a Partner in 2003, John worked with the international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London and Hong Kong. Now permanently based in Dublin, he established and headed up A&L Goodbody’s San Francisco and Palo Alto offices from 2013 to 2016.

Professional activities

John has spoken at conferences in Dublin, London, Berlin, Hong Kong, Beijing, Bangkok, California and New York (at the IDA's North American Conference), and on the UK’s Legal Television Network. He has a Masters of Commercial Law (LLM) from University College Dublin and lectures on the Law Society law school diploma course on the topic of Commercial Contracts. He advises governmental bodies on various policy issues and was a member of the Irish Government's International Content Services Centre taskforce and the International Traded Services sub-committee of the Government's Enterprise Strategy Group. John is also a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
